TRUSSVILLE — Several students from The Tribune coverage area were awarded prestigious recognition by the Visual Arts Achievement Program (VAAP), in the 4A District.
The program encourages young artists, grades 6 through 12, and showcases their work on a local and state level.
In Trussville, Hewitt-Trussville Middle School 8th grader Sydney Boggess was recognized for her painting titled, “Pomegranate”. Boggess said she is very passionate about art and she garners inspiration from objects she sees.
“I saw a pomegranate and thought that it would be fascinating to see what I could make using it as my reference,” said Boggess. “It was something that I hadn’t had much experience drawing and I thought it would be interesting to try out and see what I could create, thus my piece, Pomegranate was created.”
Kyla Cherry, a Hewitt-Trussville High School senior, was also recognized for her photo, “Stripes”. This isn’t Cherry’s first art achievement. She also placed second in the 2021 State Superintendent’s Visual Arts Exhibit, for Category II, with the same photo.
Her teacher, Layken Rubin, said Cherry has been a joy to have in class for Digital Photo 1 and Advanced Digital II.
“She is an exceptional student and constantly challenges herself to grow and be successful all while maintaining a strong work ethic,” said Rubin.
Cherry is also involved with the band and is taking three AP courses during her senior year.
Also recognized in the VAAP District 4A was Leeds Middle School 8th grader Helen Poirier, with her piece titled, “Victorian House.”
