BIRMINGHAM — When officers responded to a traffic accident overnight, they soon realized the crash was not what it seemed. The driver of the vehicle had a gunshot wound.
Birmingham Police were first called to the scene on Saturday, Feb. 6, 2021, around 4:40 a.m. The crash was at the intersection of Avenue W and Dugan Avenue.
Upon arrival, the officers noticed the car had come to a rest near a utility pole. Birmingham Fire and Rescue arrived on the scene and pronounced the driver dead. Police confirmed the man had a gunshot wound.
The man has since been identified as 26-year-old Carlos Mines, of Birmingham.
A person of interest has been taken into custody and the death is being investigated as a homicide. No motive has been established.
