BIRMINGHAM — Cornerstone Christian School announced Monday its decision to cancel the remainder of its 2020-21 high school basketball season as COVID-19 continues to threaten public health.
Cornerstone Hoops Twitter account posted the update Monday afternoon: “The Cornerstone Board has decided to cancel the remaining high school season for both boys and girls basketball. Please keep our student athletes and coaching staff in your prayers!”
Ronnie Driver, the school’s head boys coach, also took to Twitter following the announcement.
“I am EXTREMELY heartbroken for our basketball players,” posted Driver. “They have done EVERYTHING that we have asked and more! God is still good but this is a very tough day!”
According to al.com, the Eagles managed just four boys games and three girls games this season.
The AHSAA season has roughly one month of regular season play remaining, as area tournaments tip off on Feb. 8 and 9, followed by regional (Feb. 18-25) and state tournaments (March 1-6).
