DALLAS — Charley Pride, country music’s first black superstar, died on Saturday, Dec. 12, 2020. According to his publicist, the star died due to complications from COVID-19.
Pride, a Country Music Hall of Famer, was known for classic hits such as “Kiss an Angel Good Mornin” and “Just Between You and Me”. He was 86.
In his early years, Pride was a talented baseball player and he even played for the Birmingham Black Barons during his time as a pitcher. He went on to win the hearts of country music fans and had more than 50 top 10 country hits.
Just one month and one day before his death, the Country Music Association named Pride the 2020 recipient of the CMA’s Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award. Pride performed at the awards ceremony and took to the microphone to accept the honor.
The family of Pride is asking for donations to several organizations including The Pride Scholarship at Jesuit College Preparatory School, St. Philips School and Community Center and The Food Bank, in lieu of flowers.
