GARDENDALE — The Clay-Chalkville volleyball team could not find an answer for Merritt Beason on Thursday night.
The Gardendale senior dominated at the net, leading the Rockets to a Class 6A, Area 12 victory in straight sets, 25-9, 25-16, 25-12. Beason, a Florida commit, entered the match with 70 kills on the year — a figure that is sure to grow by double digits following the area win.
Gardendale, after falling to Mortimer Jordan in four sets on Tuesday, now improves to 1-1 in area play. Clay-Chalkville also sits at 1-1 in Area 12 play after a home win over Pinson Valley Tuesday night.
Both teams are back in conference play on Sept. 15, when the Cougars play host to the Rockets.
