CENTER POINT — Something fishy is going on in Jefferson County but there is no suspicious activity involved. Fish Fry Fridays is officially a new tradition for the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.
The Sheriff’s Office Chaplains have come together to offer Fish Fry Fridays throughout the summer.
Chaplain Don Thompson, the assistant pastor at More Than Conquerors Faith Church, said the effort was something the chaplains wanted to get started on earlier in the year. Unfortunately, the events were delayed because of the coronavirus pandemic. Thompson said it’s important for the community to build relationships with local deputies.
“I think in light of what we’re dealing with, with social unrest right now in our state and our nation as a whole, I think it’s imperative that we have a good working relationship with our law enforcement,” said Thompson. “As chaplains, we’re going to try to foster that atmosphere between the community and our deputies.”
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Chaplains are offering Fish Fry Fridays throughout the summer.
Thompson said for the fish fry at the Center Point substation on Friday, June 26, there was enough food to feed 75 people. The fish included tilapia, catfish and ocean perch, with vegetables and French fries.
“The chaplains put money together and even one of the Sheriff’s administrators pitched in when she heard about it,” said Thompson.
The next Fish Fry Friday will be held in Bessemer, although a date has not been determined.
Social distancing is being practiced during the events.
Jefferson County has about 30 chaplains and nine deputy-liaison chaplains. The ministry offers “service and prayer” for the sheriff’s office.
