MERIDIAN, Miss. (AP) — A man who escaped from an Alabama jail was back in custody after being captured during a high-speed car chase through eastern Mississippi.
Daniel Cole Sikes, 20, fled from a recreational area outside the Washington County Jail in southwestern Alabama and took a car on Thursday afternoon, authorities told news outlets. Deputies spotted the man and gave chase across Wayne and Clarke counties in Mississippi.
Sikes was arrested later in Lauderdale County, where Sheriff Billy Sollie said officers spread spikes across a road and popped at least one tire on the fleeing car.
“After having a collision with two vehicles, the individual jumped out of the wrecked vehicle and attempted to outrun the deputies on foot,” Sollie said.
The man jumped off a highway overpass before two deputies arrested him without further incident, Sollie said.
“Probably over a 100 miles this individual fled law enforcement, but it came to an end here in Lauderdale County,” said Clarke County Sheriff Todd Kemp, who was part of the pursuit.
Sikes was previously arrested in Alabama for burglary, Sollie said.
