TRUSSVILLE — Family friends of an 11-year-old boy that was shot and killed on Friday, May 1, while turkey hunting, have set up a GoFundMe account to raise money for the family.
According to the account, the money will go to help the family of Troy Ellis.
Ellis was a fifth grader at Cahaba Elementary School. TCS Superintendent Pattie Neill said the school system has reached out to the family.
“We were devastated to hear about the hunting accident and the loss of our precious 5th grade student,” said Neill. “Any loss of life is tragic, especially during these times of isolation when we can’t grieve together. The Ellis family and the Cahaba family are in our thoughts and prayers, and we are reaching out to help in any way we can.”
The accidental shooting happened around 9:30 a.m. Friday morning, in the 9100 block of Cedar Mountain Road, which is just east of Emerald Lake.
The victim and his father were turkey hunting with a group of hunters when the shooting happened, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.
Medical personnel rushed to the scene, but attempts to save the child’s life were unsuccessful.
The shooting remains under investigation.
Turkey hunting season within Jefferson County ends on May 3, 2020.
