BIRMINGHAM — According to the National Weather Service in Birmingham, the last round of wet weather in a week that has produced extensive flooding could produce a severe weather punch.
The rain throughout the day on Wednesday is expected to be lighter than the last two days. However, as the system passes through the local area overnight, there could be heavy rains, possible tornadoes and wind gusts of up to 60 mph. Locally, the most severe impact could come between 11 p.m. on Wednesday and 4 a.m. on Thursday.
The high winds could easily topple trees rooted in saturated soil that has absorbed abnormally large amounts of rain over the last two weeks. The unstable ground is already susceptible to mud slides and rock slides which will continue to be a concern overnight on Wednesday and into Thursday morning.
Heavy rains tonight could also trigger more flash flooding and add pressure to rivers, streams and dams already at capacity.
