Former Hewitt-Trussville starting quarterback and current Appalachian State stalwart Zac Thomas had a 2019 season to remember as the junior cemented his name into several Mountaineers’ record books.
Thomas, who finished the season as an All-Sun Belt honoree as voted on by PFF College, concluded the 2019 campaign with the program’s third-most passing touchdowns (28), the program’s seventh-most passing yards (2,718), the 10th most total yards (3,158) and the fourth-most overall touchdowns (35).
The 6-foot-1, 210-pound Thomas guided Appalachian State to a 13-1 record and helmed an offense that set a program record with fewest turnovers in a season (nine) and tied the program record for fewest lost fumbles (three). The Mountaineers defeated UAB, 31-17, in the New Orleans Bowl, which was the head coaching debut for Shawn Clark, who took over after Eli Drinkwitz was hired by Missouri in December.
Thomas finished the game with 142 passing yards and two touchdowns.
Appalachian State finished the year as Sun Belt Conference champions and wrapped this season riding a six-game winning streak.
For his career, Thomas has thrown 49 touchdown passes (fourth-most in program history), passed for 4,790 yards (seventh-most in program history), accumulated 5,779 total yards (seventh-most in program history) and recorded 67 total touchdowns (fifth-most in program history).
The Mountaineers will enter the 2020 season loaded with a team that returns almost every prominent player.
