PINSON — The family of a Pinson man struck in a hit-and-run on Interstate 59/20 is trying to keep the word out about the incident.
Jose Ramos, 68, was badly hurt and has been hospitalized since the incident on Friday, Nov. 22. His injuries were life-threatening, but his daughter, Felisha Ramos, said his condition is improving.
“He is doing much better than they expected,” Felisha Ramos said. “In the beginning, they thought he wasn’t going to make it and now they don’t understand how he is doing as well as he is.”
The Marine veteran, who works as a diesel mechanic, was working on an 18-wheeler when he was hit, near mile marker 97. His back was broken, along with several ribs and he sustained a brain injury. He is being treated at UAB, where his family is praying the person responsible will be found.
“He is a hard-working, loving father and papaw! Always working hard enough to take care of us. Our father always loved working and staying busy,” said Felisha Ramos.
Jose Ramos is known for his caring, kind-hearted and loving spirit. In fact, he has 17 children, eight boys and nine girls. The youngest is only 3-years-old.
“Our father is the rock to all of us, whether it’s a bad day, heartache, or the loss of our brother in 2018, and he is the strongest man we have ever known,” Felisha Ramos explained.
His family said Jose Ramos is always willing to help others. Now, they want others to help him.
“Everyone needs to bring awareness for everyone that works on the highway,” said Felisha Ramos. “Maybe this will help other people. Show them others’ lives matter. It’s heartbreaking.”
The family is pleading for anyone with information to come forward and contact authorities.
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is investigating.
