TRUSSVILLE — The Trussville City Council approved a measure to change the speed limit on the new Valley Road extension to 40 mph. Along the road, there are speed limit changes ranging from 30 mph to 40 mph.
The new ordinance will change the speed limit from Chalkville Road to Roosevelt Boulevard to 40 mph. The measure was approved during the council’s regular meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2019.
After a recommendation by the city’s Public Safety Committee, the city council also passed a resolution to add speed cushions or humps along Carrington Drive. Speeding along the roadway had been a concern to some residents and city leaders.
ROTARY CLOCK
The city council approved an agreement between the mayor and the Rotary Club, concerning the Rotary Club’s donation of a clock for the redeveloped downtown area.

The clock will be installed by the city and all maintenance will be the city’s responsibility, according to the agreement. The total cost of the clock and a plaque will be $27,995. The Rotary Club will reimburse the city for the project, with a beginning sum of $10,000, then will make payments of $5,000 annually.
LONGEVITY PAY
A resolution for longevity pay was passed, allowing a bonus for employees who work for the city for five or more years. From five to nine years, employees get $400, from 10 to 14 years, employees get $500, from 15 to 19 years, employees get $750 and employees who work for the city 20 or more years get $1,000 each year.
FIRE DEPARTMENT
Trussville Fire and Rescue was approved for 15 self-contained breathing apparatuses (SCBA). The fire department needed the new equipment and a bid was put out for vendors. Sunbelt Fire Equipment won the bid by offering all 15 apparatuses for $110,920. The resolution passed by the council gives Mayor Buddy Choat clearance to sign a contract for the equipment.
Two Trussville Fire and Rescue employees were promoted to captain. EMT Officer Cindy Jones and Training Officer Chris Franklin were promoted to captain. Jones has been with the department since 1999. Franklin has been with the department since 2001. Paramedic/Firefighter Brandon Jones was promoted to lieutenant.
Councilman Perry Cook was not in attendance at Tuesday’s city council meeting.
