From The Trussville Tribune staff reports
NEW YORK — The TCS New York City Marathon, the largest marathon in the world, is not for the faint of heart.
The annual race, which takes place on the first Sunday of November and includes over 50,000 runners from the world’s top professional athletes to runners of all ages and abilities, is a brutal test of endurance and perseverance. That challenge was overcome by Trussville native Skip Mathews on Sunday. The 63-year-old Mathews finished the race with an unofficial time of 6:10.22. His average mile was 14:08.
Mathews started the race at 11:03 a.m. and finished the 26.2 mile course at 5:14 p.m.
The course wound its way through Staten Island, into Brooklyn via the Verranzzano-Narrows Bridge, and then on to Queens and the Bronx before finishing in Central Park.
