TRUSSVILLE — Birmingham has a new mountain bike race and Trussville is getting in on the action.
The Hammies, created by Max Klein, eschews the typical if you ain’t first, you’re last mindset around most competitions and introduces a race that is open for those more inclined to embrace the leisureliness of riding through nature, albeit down rock faces and through hairpin turns on narrow trails.
The event is a four-day race that takes place in four different locations: Red Mountain Park, Oak Mountain State Park, Trussville Sports Complex and the Tannehill Ironworks Historical Park. The races are all a week apart.
Racers will have the option of choosing to race one lap or two laps. The first lap will be based on age division; however, the second lap, or “Super Hammies Championship” as it’s called, is optional. Racers under the age of 14 are not eligible for the “Super Hammies Championship.”
The Hammies does not have an award ceremony, but, for racers itching to add to their medal collection, the event gives out sprocket medals to the top three finishers of each age group.
There will be other activities such as: cornhole, raffles, “slow” bike races and much more.
