BIRMINGHAM — A Birmingham police officer was sent to the hospital on Monday afternoon following a chase through the city that led to two crashes involving the police.
According to news reports, an officer ran a tag on a red Chevrolet Silverado truck. The officer learned that it was stolen. As the officer attempted to pull the truck over, the driver fled.
During the chase, an officer was involved in a crash with another vehicle in the 2300 block of Sixth Avenue North. No one was seriously injured. The chase continued towards UAB. As the Silverado ran a red light, the trailing officer hit a white BMW in the intersection of Fifth Avenue South and 20th Street.
According to AL.com, the female driver of the BMW fled the scene. Police are now searching for her.
The officer involved in the collision was transported by Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service as a precaution. His injuries are not believed to be serious.
The Silverado was then found abandoned between two homes in the 1500 block of 15th Street South.
An investigation is currently underway.
