BIRMINGHAM — The city of Birmingham will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Grand River Technology Park on Thursday, Oct. 24, at 10:45 a.m.
The 105-acre development will be built on undeveloped land and abandoned coal mines near Barber Motorsports. A state-of-the-art technology hub is expected to bring 1,200 jobs and is expected to have an annual economic impact of $85 million.
Birmingham City Councilor Hunter Williams said major companies will invest in the city.
“It is a huge win for everyone who lives here,” said Williams. “These are the types of jobs we want to attract as we continue to put an emphasis on workforce development and create a pipeline for our students to be able to find quality, high-paying jobs of the future.”

The Grand River Technology Park is the product of a partnership between U.S. Steel and the City of Birmingham. Along with attracting technology companies, the site will serve as the new home for the Southern Museum of Flight.
Councilor Williams will be giving remarks, along with Governor Kay Ivey, representatives with U.S. Steel and state officials.
