TRUSSVILLE — Renderings of the plans for the corner of Main Street and North Chalkville Road were revealed during the Trussville Area Chamber of Commerce luncheon on Thursday, Oct. 17, 2019.
Mayor Buddy Choat showed images of what the corner of the old Braden’s Furniture store could look like. Design on the area includes parking, a large clock and new sidewalks.
“When you get on Highway 11, you’ll start seeing poles coming down, sidewalks going up and street lights,” said Choat. “All of that is part of a plan that you will start seeing going west to east and will finish up on the South Chalkville Road side.”
A new plaza will be the focal point of the downtown revamp. The Trussville Rotary Daybreak Club is donating a large clock to be the centerpiece of the design.
The intersection of Main Street and Chalkville Road will also be widened. Mayor Choat said new traffic signals will be installed.
“When people start coming to downtown Trussville, they are going to notice what a big change this is,” said Choat. “It is going to make a difference to the appearance of Trussville from now on and I’m pretty excited about it.”
Linden Street will be revamped after the building at 110 North Chalkville Road is demolished. Linden Street will also be turned into a right-in, right-out only road. Public parking will also be added.
“Once it’s landscaped with sidewalks, it’s going to change,” Choat said. “The appearance of downtown is going to change drastically.”
The first event planned for the city’s new Entertainment District is scheduled for the second Saturday, June 13, 2020. The event will be a celebration of 200 years for the city of Trussville and will be the Trussville Downtown Merchants Association’s 2nd Saturday celebration.
“A couple of years ago, I remember saying, ‘It’s going to happen.’ Now we can see it happening instead of talking about it,” said Choat. “This year if there’s a theme, I guess it’s ‘It’s happening,’ because it’s happening right now.”
