BIRMINGHAM – Smoking will now be prohibited in Birmingham’s Health District on the city’s Southside after the city council passed an ordinance declaring it a smoke-free zone on Tuesday, Oct. 15.
The Health District will officially launch on Dec. 1, 2019.
The district covers the majority of Children’s of Alabama, Cooper Green Mercy Health Services, Jefferson County Department of Health, Southern Research, University of Alabama at Birmingham and UAB Medicine, and Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
Smoking will now be prohibited in all sidewalks, streets, curbs and gutters, alleys, bus stop areas and parks within the Health District.
Property owners within the district will have the option to create designated smoking areas on their property.
