Sometimes they need a hand up … not a handout, but a hand up! They need to be appreciated and sometimes that’s what it takes and that’s why there are organizations like the one we are in. – Diane Waller, American Legion Auxiliary Unit 205

CLAY — Long after coming home from war, veterans face challenges throughout their day-to-day lives. Whether it be aches and pains from physical wounds or the sorrow caused by emotional trauma and inadequate care, these veterans will forever stand strong in the hearts of Americans. That’s why the American Legion has focused efforts on veterans, families of veterans and on educating the public on the sheer sacrifices made by our nation’s heroes.
The American Legion SSG Michael W. Hosey Post 205 for Clay-Trussville has charged into the community to identify and address the needs of veterans living in the area. On Saturday, Oct. 19, 2019, the Post is hosting a community yard sale to allow others to join in the effort.
Proceeds from the yard sale will benefit the American Legion Auxillary Unit 205. President of the Auxiliary, Diane Waller, said the Auxiliary works to support the Legion and the community.
“As a women’s veteran’s assistance program, we are a helper of the Legion,” said Waller. “We come together as a family.”
Among programs that will benefit are the Poppy Program, emergency fund programs and Veterans Administration rehab programs, the Oratorical Contest, Girls Nation and youth scholarships.
“We go into the schools and teach about our programs and what Americanism means, we teach about flag etiquette and community service,” said Waller.
As a wife of a veteran, Waller said she knows all too well the needs of those who signed up to make the ultimate sacrifice.
“When you go to the veterans’ hospital, you see the things that touch your heart,” Waller said. “Some of these veterans are very much alone and don’t have anybody. You see the sacrifices.
“He may come back to us, but sometimes they come back to us scarred. And we have to reach out and help them because they are doing that for us. They are keeping us safe. They take that battle to where it’s not here and they’re doing that for our protection.”
That’s why, Waller said, fundraising is important to the Auxiliary.
“We can reach out into the communities and help veterans and find where help is needed,” she said. “When we find those needs and we know we have those funds, we can use them for those purposes.”
Post 205 hopes the large yard sale will also benefit community members by offering large discounts on quality items. The Post is accepting donations for the yard sale. Drop off hours are listed below.
The yard sale will be from 8 a.m. – 2 p.m. at Post 205, which is located at 7257 Old Springville Road in Clay. You can also make a monetary donation to the American Legion, the Auxiliary, Riders of the Legion or Sons of the Legion at the yard sale or by mailing a check to the post.
