ARGO — The Argo City Council announced the hiring of two police officers on Monday as the council convened for its bi-monthly meeting.
The department hired a part-time and full-time officer. The council confirmed the hirings unanimously.
The fire department also announced that a burn ban is still in effect until further notice.
The council discussed the new storm shelter that arrived a couple of weeks ago. The keys have arrived and the city received a quote from Kris n Co. of $4,875 for water and sewage. The city approved unanimously the hiring of the company to perform the work.
Mayor Betty Bradley talked about the issue surrounding the city’s wifi.
“We had an estimate of $1,196,” Bradley said. “It’s the city of Argo’s cost estimate to fix failing wifi access. They’re having trouble accessing it because our wifi and stuff is so old. This is for the equipment that was given to us, and he will not charge us to install it.”
The plan for the new wifi is to separate it into a private account with an option for guests. The cost will be taken out of the building fund. A motion to take $1,200 out of the fund for the wifi passed unanimously.
In addition, Bradley announced that the city did not receive the ATRIP grant.
“We have worked on trying to get some money for several years now,” Bradley said. “We met with ALDOT, we met with county officials and we also met with our state representatives. We are trying to get the 148 exit extended because the traffic is backing up on the interstate. We are also trying to get them to take responsibility for the road between Jacks and Highway 11, which is their road. It has got potholes all in it.”
Bradley responded to the letter with disappointment.
“It’s a safety hazard,” she said. “Someone is going to be seriously injured or killed on that interstate trying to dodge potholes on the parkway.”
Bradley hopes to hear a response soon.
