BIRMINGHAM — Cory Moon was introduced as the next chief of the Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service on Monday by Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin.
Julius Purifie will be the deputy chief.

The Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service announced the new chief and deputy chief in a Facebook post Monday afternoon.
“As you all know the mayor and his staff have been conducting a search for the next fire chief. This search has involved assessment centers and interviews with candidates from within as well as outside of our fire department. After much consideration the mayor has made the decision that the next Fire Chief for the Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service will be Cory Moon. He has also announced that the next Deputy Chief will be Julius Purifie,” said Interim Chief John B. Whitmer in a statement announced via Facebook.
Whitmer will remain interim chief until February.
“I am in full support of the mayor’s decision as I believe Chiefs Moon and Purifie will be the leadership that our department needs to progress and move forward. Over the last several years I have been able to witness their tremendous work ethic and dedication to the department.”
