IRONDALE — Clay-Chalkville returned from a much needed bye week with a resounding 31-13 victory over region foe Shades Valley on Friday night.
The victory halted a two-game losing streak for the Cougars. The win also was the first region victory for Clay-Chalkville (4-2, 1-2 Class 6A Region 6).
The Cougars relied on a solid passing game behind the arm of quarterback Damione Ward. He finished the first half with 186 passing yards on 9-for-10 attempts. Ward had completions of 53, 33, 35 and 28 yards as he steered the Cougars to touchdown drives of 71 and 82 yards in the second quarter to give Clay-Chalkville a 21-10 lead at the half.
Ward finished 11-for-15 for 195 yards. He recorded 41 yards on 11 carries, including a 7-yard touchdown run.
Clay-Chalkville’s offense returned to solid ground in the second half with a running game that recorded 97 yards to close out the game.
Shades Valley, burdened by numerous injuries, especially at quarterback, trotted out quarterback Earl Woods. The freshman went 10-for-15 for 93 yards and one touchdown.
The Cougars outgained the Mounties, 358-236, on the night.
