BIRMINGHAM — A shooting investigation is currently underway after a Birmingham police officer engaged a suspect armed with a handgun on Monday night in the 4100 block of Messer Airport Highway.
The Birmingham Police Department reports that a south precinct officer was on a routine patrol in the Tom Brown Housing Community when multiple shots rang out. Upon further investigation, the officer encountered a suspect armed with a handgun. The officer discharged his weapon. The shots wounded the suspect.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue reported to the scene and transported the suspect to UAB Hospital. The suspect’s injury is reported to be non-life threatening. There was no injury to the officer.
