BIRMINGHAM — Record heat will persist throughout this week as an extreme weather pattern has settled in across the deep south; however, relief is in sight as a cold front is set to dip down early next week and send temperatures plummeting into the 70s and 80s.
Until then, temperatures will remain 10 to 25 degrees above average throughout the rest of this week with highs remaining in the upper 90s. According to The Weather Channel, Atlanta, Birmingham, Mobile, Knoxville and Tallahassee are expected to have several days of record or near-record highs remaining.
This past Sunday, daily record highs were set in Birmingham and Montgomery; Knoxville; Richmond, Virginia; and Raleigh and Charlotte, North Carolina. On Wednesday, the previous record of 93 degrees set in 1904 in Birmingham is expected to be shattered with a high of 98 degrees.
A cold front is expected to sweep through this Friday, but will only touch the northern parts of Alabama. Those in the Northeast are expected to to wake up with the first frost or freeze of the season. Those in north Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Arkansas and Oklahoma will see temperatures dip into the 80s.
For those in the Birmingham area, relief will not arrive until Monday when the temperatures are expected to be in the low 80s throughout the rest of next week.
