BIRMINGHAM — A 22-year-old man fell to his death from a UAB parking garage on Thursday afternoon. The death is believed to be a suicide.
According to news reports, Derek Tyler Smith was found unresponsive on the sidewalk near the School of Medicine administrative offices at Sixth Avenue South and 20th Street. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Birmingham Police Sgt. Johnny Williams told AL.com that they believe the man jumped from the top floor of the six story parking deck.
The university send out a statement to employees and staff: “It is with a heavy heart I share news of an employee suicide this afternoon. It occurred at the 6th Street parking deck and police are on the scene. Hospital Human Resources will share mental health resources with employees as appropriate. We have no further details at this time and police are working to notify the family.”
