BIRMINGHAM — A grand jury in Jefferson County indicted a Center Point man on several charges in connection to the death of Birmingham Police officer, Sgt. Wytasha Carter.
Jeremy Owens, 31, is charged with capital murder, two counts of attempted murder, one count of certain persons forbidden to possess a firearm and one count of possession of marijuana, according to court documents.
Sgt. Wytasha Carter was shot and killed on Jan. 13, 2019, while investigating vehicle break-ins that occurred in downtown Birmingham. Another officer was critically injured during the incident.
Owens was later arrested at UAB’s Spain Rehab Center. He remains in the Jefferson County Jail with no bond.
Carter had served with the Birmingham Police Department since 2011, where he has worked various assignments including West Precinct, HICOPP and Youth Services as a school resource officer. Carter was promoted to sergeant in February 2018.
Carter began his law enforcement career in 2002 as a correctional officer with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office. Later that year, he joined the Leeds Police Department where he served as an officer. In 2007, Carter joined the Fairfield Police Department until transferring to the Birmingham Police Department.
Carter was a 1993 graduate of Phillips High School. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Belford University. He also served in the United States Air Force. He is survived by his wife and children.
