BIRMINGHAM — An investigation by the Alabama Bureau of Investigation is underway into the shooting of a vehicle burglary suspect by a Birmingham police officer.
“At approximately midnight, officers from the South Precinct responded to the 2100 block of Highland Avenue to investigate a report of a vehicle break-in in progress,” Sgt. Johnny Williams of the Birmingham Police Department said. “Upon arrival, a BPD officer received information of a suspect that was breaking into a vehicle in the rear of the location.”
The responding officer located a suspect matching the description inside a vehicle in the rear parking lot.
Williams said the officer and suspect became involved in an altercation before the officer discharged his weapon striking the suspect.
“BPD officers provided aid to the suspect until Birmingham Fire and Rescue reported to the scene and transported the subject to UAB Hospital for treatment,” Williams said. “The suspect’s injury is reported to be non-life threatening. There was no injury to the officer.”
The suspect remains in the hospital receiving treatment for his injury.
