PINSON — Alabama Governor Kay Ivey named Pinson Valley High School one of 21 Bicentennial Schools of Excellence. Each school received a $5,000 Governor’s Award grant to support student-led community engagement.
The purpose of the designation is to honor schools, students and teachers that participate in community service and engagement projects. PVHS’s project involved students who interviewed local residents to gather stories and memories from the city of Pinson. The history, tales and recipes were published in a book. Art students participated in illustrations for the project.

“I will always be grateful for this opportunity to work with students on a different level and will never forget how they brought joy into the lives of the senior citizens in our community,” said Moore.
A group of community leaders from across the state served on the task force to designate schools.
In addition to receiving the Governor’s Award grants, the Schools of Excellence will be invited to participate in commemoration ceremonies in Montgomery on Dec. 14, 2019, the culmination of Alabama’s bicentennial.
