TRUSSVILLE — A Calera man is facing a drug charge after concerned drivers called about a person walking down Interstate 59 in Trussville.
The incident happened on Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2019. The officer found the man walking northbound near mile marker 139, between the I-459 interchange and the Chalkville Mountain Road overpass.
According to a police report, the man said he was walking to Georgia. The officer noted the man was slurring his words and he offered him a ride to the gas station. The officer asked to pat the man down for weapons before he let him in his patrol unit. That’s when the officer said he found a used syringe in the man’s pocket. The man told the officer he found the syringe on the ground and didn’t want a kid to pick it up.
Christopher Jacob Giles, 28, of Calera, was arrested for possession of drug paraphernalia. The arresting officer said Giles asked him to let him go because he had top-secret clearance with the military, according to the police report.
Giles was booked into the Trussville City Jail.
According to court documents, Giles was sentenced to 45 days probation earlier this year for felony breaking and entering a vehicle and theft of property. He also has previous assault and burglary convictions.
As for the possession of drug paraphernalia charge, Giles is considered innocent until proven guilty.
