GULF SHORES, Ala. (AP) — A preliminary autopsy says a Nevada man who was shot twice by Alabama police died from jumping off a condominium tower, not the gunshots.
News outlets that Baldwin County sheriff’s officials released findings of the death of 38-year-old Russell Mallette of Sparks, Nevada, on Wednesday.
Authorities say Gulf Shores police stopped Mallette early Monday, and the man was shot twice after grabbing an officer’s gun and opening fire. They say Mallette then ran to a condominium and jumped from the eighth floor despite his injuries.
Investigative Lt. Rex Bishop says neither of the gunshots was life-threatening, and a preliminary autopsy lists injuries from the fall as the cause of death. Bishop says investigators have video from both officers and bystanders.
Three Gulf Shores police officers are on leave.
