Jones launched his 2020 campaign with a rally in Birmingham attended Sunday by several hundred cheering supporters.
Invoking the campaign theme of “One Alabama,” Jones said he is a senator who represents all of Alabama and will fight for the economic future of the state.
The Deep South Democrat defeated Republican Roy Moore in 2017 in a special election. Now considered the Senate’s most endangered Democrat, he is expected to face an uphill battle.
Alabama Republican Party (ALGOP) Chairman Terry Lathan issued the following statement on Senator Doug Jones’ re-election kickoff.
“Senator Doug Jones claims to be for ‘One Alabama’ but during his short tenure he’s proven the only one he’s listening to is himself. Time and again he keeps ignoring the will of the majority of Alabamians – who overwhelmingly support President Trump and the administration’s agenda – by defiantly voting NO on the President’s nominees and policies:
- July 9, 2019 – Voted NO on the nomination of Daniel Bress to the U.S. Court of Appeals, Ninth Circuit
- May 1, 2019 – Voted NO on the nomination of Alabama Solicitor General Andrew Brasher to the U.S. District Court
- April 11, 2019 – Voted NO President Trump’s nominee for Interior Secretary
- March 14, 2019 – Voted NO on the President’s Emergency Declaration funding the border wall with Mexico
- February 28, 2019 – Voted NO on Andrew Wheeler as head of the Environmental Protection Agency

- January 17, 2019 – Voted NO on banning the use of federal funds for abortions

“Senator Jones should rename his motto ‘One and Done for Alabama’. We are confident the voters of our great state will reset this seat with a Republican on November 3, 2020,” said Lathan.
Republican National Convention Spokesperson Kevin Knoth also responded.
“Doug Jones may be kicking off his campaign today, but it’ll be Alabamians doing most of the kicking in 2020,” said Knoth. “With President Trump’s unparalleled support in the state in contrast to Jones’ bottom-barrel approval rating, the Yellowhammer State can’t wait to boot Jones out of the Senate.”
