ELKMONT — Sheriff’s deputies are investigating after they said a 14-year-old boy shot and killed five family members in Limestone County.
Shortly after 12:30 a.m. on Sunday morning, the Limestone County Sheriff’s Office announced that five people had been shot at a residence in the 25000 block of Ridge Road in Elkmont. Three were confirmed dead at the scene and two were airlifted in critical condition, according to the statement.
Just after 3 a.m., the sheriff’s office provided updated information that the two individuals who had been airlifted in critical condition had died.
Investigators said the 14-year-old called the sheriff’s office at about 11 p.m. on Monday. He originally told investigators that he was in the basement of the home, heard gunshots and fled through a door.
According to the sheriff’s office, there were discrepancies in his story. He was taken to the sheriff’s office where investigators pointed out the discrepancies, at which point he confessed to killing all five family members.
The teenager was been charged with juvenile murder, but could face charges as an adult, investigators said.
The sheriff’s office identified the adult victims as 38-year-old John Sisk, father of the suspect, and 35-year-old Mary Sisk, stepmother of the suspect. Also killed were a 6-year-old brother, a 5-year-old sister and a 6-month-old brother. The juvenile victims were not identified.
Mary Sisk was a teacher at Mountain Gap Middle School in the Huntsville City School system.
According to law enforcement, the 14-year-old shooter assisted investigators in locating the weapon, a 9mm handgun, that he said he tossed nearby. The gun was later recovered from the side of the road. Investigators said the gun was illegally in the residence, but did not provide additional details.
Elkmont is located a few miles south of the Alabama-Tennessee line.
No motive for the shooting has been announced and the names of the victims and suspect have not been released at this time.
