TRUSSVILLE — Emily White, senior 2020 of Hewitt-Trussville High School, was selected to represent HTHS at the 2019 Alabama Governors School (AGS) this past summer located at Samford University.
Every school in Alabama has the opportunity to nominate a rising senior to participate. The students apply for admission by completing an application, essay and transcript review.
Admitted AGS Students select from a list of courses to participate in for a two week period while living on Samford’s Campus. White said she was pleased with the classes she was able to take.
“My major class was Research Science,” said White. “My secondary course was Walk on the Wildside where we hiked several trails in the area and conducted our own research evaluation of the land and streams.
“It really was one of the best experiences I’ve had. I highly recommend this experience to anyone who wants to get a better hands-on experience of any career.”
Alabama Governor’s School is a 13-day, summer, residential honors program funded by Samford University, the state of Alabama and private sources. It is a highly selective program that chooses the best students from around the state to take challenging seminars and participate in team-building activities.
The program was established in 1987 as the Alabama Honors Academy at Samford University and patterned after Governor’s schools in North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Georgia, Mississippi and Kentucky.
