BIRMINGHAM — An elderly man was shot and killed when he answered a knock on the door of his home near Ruffner Mountain on Thursday night, according to Birmingham Police Sgt. Johnny Williams.
Williams said the shooting occurred at approximately 9:30 p.m. at 8645 Ninth Court Circle South and a homicide investigation is now underway.
The victim has been identified as Lewis Zicarelli, a white male, 78, of Birmingham.
“Officers from the East Precinct responded to 8645 9th Court Circle South to investigate a report of a person shot,” Williams said. “Upon arrival, officers observed a person lying in the front room of the residence unresponsive. The victim appeared to have suffered an apparent gunshot wound. Birmingham Fire and Rescue arrived along with the Jefferson County Coroner and pronounced the victim deceased on the scene.”
Williams said there is no suspect in custody at this time.
