BIRMINGHAM — A felony warrant was obtained by the Birmingham Police Department for one of their own Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2019.
The warrant was obtained by the Birmingham Police Department’s Major Assault Unit and was related to a use of force complaint on Aug. 1, 2019, according to law enforcement.
Police have identified the individual as Stephon Green, 25, of Bessemer. The warrant obtained against Green was for second degree assault.
Police said that supervisors received a use of force complaint form while Green was on duty.
“The officer was assigned to transport a female prisoner from the Birmingham City Jail to the hospital for evaluation during the evening hours of Aug. 1, 2019,” said BPD Sergeant Johnny Williams. “After arriving at the hospital, supervisors received information of an altercation between the officer and prisoner. Supervisors arrived to find that the prisoner had sustained serious injuries to the face while in the custody of Officer Green.”
Police said that after learning of the allegations, the officer was immediately placed on administrative duties pending the outcome of the investigation. Following the completion of the investigation and confirmation of the warrant, the information was forwarded to the Birmingham Police Department Crime Reduction Team. On Aug. 14, 2019,

Green was taken into custody by members of the Birmingham Police Department Crime Reduction Team and transported to the Jefferson County Jail.
Green was hired with the Birmingham Police Department on April 18, 2016. After graduation from the police academy, Green was assigned to the Patrol Division at the South Precinct. Green will be placed on administrative leave without pay with a pending hearing.
