JEFFERSON COUNTY — The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after several car break-ins and a car theft in east Jefferson County.
Residents on Cobblestone Drive said at least three cars were broken into and one stolen overnight on July 31. The vehicles were locked and windows were broken. A firearm and keys to the car that was stolen were among items taken from the cars.
One family had $600 of damage to their cars, including a damaged car seat that was thrown out of the car and had shards of broken glass inside it.
Another family had their kids’ backpacks taken from their truck.
Families on Cobblestone Drive said public street lighting is a problem on their road. They have reported criminal activity in the area including copper pipe thefts.
One neighbor, who did not want to be identified, said the safety of children in the community should be a top priority.
“We need to start reporting what we see to the police instead of waiting for some to target or violate our private property that we go to and work hard for as productive upstanding citizens,” she said.
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is hoping to find the stolen car and will be looking for credit card activity to lead them to the suspects.
