BIRMINGHAM — Birmingham Police are investigating what they believe is a domestic incident that escalated to a homicide and a suicide on Saturday night, according to Sgt. Johnny Williams.
Williams said officers from the South Precinct responded to 819 30th St. S. to investigate a report of a person shot.
“Officers arrived and located the victim, Jameria Howard, 28, lying in the parking lot unresponsive and suffering from an apparent gunshot wound,” Williams said. “Birmingham Fire and Rescue arrived and transported the victim to UAB Hospital for treatment. Officers also received information that the suspect stole a vehicle from the parking lot and fled the scene.”
Investigators later received information that Howard had succumbed to her injury.
As investigators responded to the Southside shooting location, West Precinct officers received a call of a person shot at 616 5th Place, Williams said.
Officers arrived and located the subject suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Birmingham Fire and Rescue arrived and transported the victim to UAB Hospital for treatment where he succumbed to his injury shortly upon arrival.
That victim was identified as Danny Hagler, 34.
While investigating both shootings, investigators learned that both incidents were related.
Investigators learned that both Howard and Hagler were involved in a relationship and lived together at 819 30th Place S., according to Williams.
“Investigators learned that an argument ensued just before the first shooting,” Williams said. “Investigators found that the suspect (Hagler) shot the victim (Howard) and left the scene in a stolen vehicle.”
Williams said that Hagler’s injury appears to be self-inflicted.
