TRUSSVILLE – Drum Corps International (DCI) will be performing at the Hewitt-Trussville stadium Friday, July 26, starting at 7 p.m.
“Drum Corps International is a regional event,” said Hewitt-Trussville Band Director Scott Waid. “Basically, Drum Corps is major league marching music. It is kind of the top organization … it is a band, but it is only brass and percussion.”
Musicians in DCI are among the best in the nation and can serve as a great inspiration to students in local band programs.
“It is marching band at a very, very high level,” said Waid. “It is something that students involved with their school marching band program would be able to come and see this activity at a really high level. The people in the drum and bugle corps are anywhere between 16 and 21 years old. They practice everyday during the summer and they go on tours throughout the country. Basically, touring and competing.”
Trussville audiences will be able to enjoy DCI right before a major competition this weekend in Atlanta.
“They’re kind of all converging on the southeast,” said Waid. “This weekend there is a big show in Atlanta at the Georgia Dome. They are all doing smaller regional shows in the southeast and then tomorrow they will all be in Atlanta for a big southeast regional championship.”
Events such as DCI can really emphasize what student musicians can achieve. It also highlights the importance of having music, arts and culture programs in our local schools.
“Band is invaluable, it is so important to the overall education of students,” said Waid. “It just brings so many rewarding things for
