CENTER POINT – The Center Point City Council approved a measure that would place outdoor cameras at the community center. Under the arrangement, Alabama Power would install nine cameras at the location and Center Point would pay a monthly fee of $1,249.16 for the cameras and all related equipment. Once installed, the cameras can be viewed in real-time from multiple locations. Video produced by the cameras will also be maintained for later viewing.
“I remember at one of the community watch meetings a couple of months ago there was a gentleman here,” said Council President Roger Barlow. “He was real concerned about gunshots on his streets. We put one of our two portable cameras over there, and when the cameras are there, they don’t do it … With this system, we could get another camera and put it over there for months … we can add cameras to this system.”
Adding additional cameras at the same cost is also part of the package deal with Alabama Power. The measure was passed unanimously.
The council also considered a measure to grant a beer and wine license to the new owners of the Center Point Food Mart. The council granted the license contingent upon the new owners of the Center Point Food Mart being able to get an ABC license.
Mayor Tom Henderson addressed the council on the new library.
“Construction is moving along very well,” said Henderson. “I think construction will be done in August or early September. We’re having trouble finding a library director for it. They’ve interviewed twice and been turned down. They’ve got another group to interview starting Tuesday. They’ve got five more to interview Tuesday. Hopefully, we’ll get somebody out of that group.”
Council President Roger Barlow spoke to the council about an upcoming event in Center Point.
“The Center Point Fire Department is sponsoring their annual golf tournament Monday at Grayson Valley,” said Barlow. “… we appreciate the fire department and what they do.”
