BIRMINGHAM — The Birmingham Police Department has taken back the investigation into a triple shooting that claimed the life of a Jefferson County woman.
Shaneia Causewell, of Birmingham, was killed in the shooting that happened on Monday, July 15, 2019, around 9:30 p.m.
Police responded to a call of shots fired at 1776 Sixth Way NW, in the East Pinson Valley community in Birmingham. Three shooting victims had already been taken to area hospitals by private vehicles.
Detectives with Birmingham said they discovered an altercation began when unwelcomed guests arrived at the home of the woman who was shot and killed. Witnesses said the people were asked to leave but they opened fire. The three shooting victims are related.
On July 16, the Birmingham Police Department sent out a release that said they were handing over the investigation to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office. At that time, the department said the homicide occurred in the Center Point jurisdiction. On Friday, July 19, Birmingham Police sent out another release announcing they were taking the investigation back and that an arrest had been made.
Sgt. Johnny Williams, with the Birmingham Police Department, responded to a news inquiry about why the case was transferred for a second time.
“It is all based on the address and the close proximity to the jurisdiction line,” Sgt. Williams said.
Derrick Peterson, 21, of Birmingham, was arrested in connection to the shooting. He is charged with murder and two counts of attempted murder. Peterson is being held in the Jefferson County Jail on bonds totaling $120,000.
