TRUSSVILLE—In the championship round of the women’s basketball Husky Thanksgiving Tournament, Spain Park defeated Hewitt-Trussville Huskies 52-42.
The Jaguars jumped off to a fast start and took a 22-8 lead in the first quarter. Senior guard Bailey Bowers led the way with 10 points in the quarter with her teammate Sara Ashlee Barker chipping in eight points, as well.
The Huskies picked up the defensive pressure and held the Jaguars to only a six-point second quarter, but were unable to put much in the basket as they only put up seven in the quarter to trim the deficit 28-15 at halftime.
The third quarter was kind to the Huskies as they scored 10 points in the quarter with seven coming from senior Morgan Kirk. The Jaguars were able to get seven points making the score 35-25 heading into the final quarter.
Hewitt-Trussville gave tremendous fight on the offensive end in the fourth quarter, going 7-10 from the free throw line and scoring 17 points, but were unable to keep up the defensive pressure. Spain Park was able to match the Huskies with 17 points in the final quarter to end the game 52-42.
Kirk led the Huskies with 21 points and Sophomore Amiya Payne added nine.
