TRUSSVILLE – Trussville resident Dr. Elizabeth Steele has been named Educator of the Year by the Alabama Optometric Association (ALOA).
The ALOA Educator of the Year Award is presented to a qualified Alabama Doctor of Optometry in recognition of outstanding service on behalf of the profession of Optometry, optometric education and to the visual welfare of the public.
Steele graduated from Wofford College and then attended the UAB School of Optometry. She completed residency at the Tuscaloosa Veterans Affairs Medical Center, where she specialized in family practice optometry and ocular disease.
In 2004 Steele joined the UAB faculty, and currently serves as the Associate Dean of Clinical Affairs.
Steele received the AOSA Clinical Science Teaching award in 2005, 2008 and 2011, and the UAB President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2012. Steele was awarded the Alabama Optometric Association Young Optometrist Award in 2009, and received the Southeastern Council of Optometrists Young Optometrist of the South Award in 2010.
Steele lectures locally and nationally in the areas of ocular and systemic decease, and has been a fellow of the American Academy of Optometry since 2007.
