GATLINBURG, Tenn. – A total of seven have been confirmed dead after wildfires in Sevier County, Tennessee that burned nearly 15,000 acres on Monday.
Thousands evacuated the areas of Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge after wildfires began burning Monday night, spreading rapidly into Tuesday morning. WBRC reports officials estimate more than 700 structures countywide have been damaged or destroyed. Although all fires are out, some are still smoldering.
The Gatlinburg fire chief said wind speeds reached 87 mph at one point, which is equivalent to hurricane force winds. Law enforcement officials said early evidence indicates the fire may have been caused by humans, but the investigation is ongoing. An estimated 14,000 people were evacuated this week.
