PINSON – In order to accommodate last week’s National League of Cities meeting, Pinson’s council met Monday rather than on their usual Thursday. The schedule was relatively short, but eventful.
The council began the meeting by recognizing the Rudd Middle School Boys track team for winning the Jefferson County Championship as well as an outstanding regular season. In addition to the recognition received by the boys’ team, one member of the girls’ track team received special recognition.
Seventh grader Charlotte Phillips not only won the Individual Girls Jefferson County Championship, but she also currently holds the fastest track time in Pinson Valley history.
The Rudd track teams aren’t the only ones moving quickly. With the moratorium on annexation lifted after the recent elections, the expansion of Pinson is in full swing. The council annexed one property at the 4100 block of Pinson Boulevard, one on Old Sweeny Hollow Road, one at the 5600 block of Miles Spring Road, one on the 5800 block of Willow Ridge Road and one in Bryant Estates on Pendelton Road.
Mayor Hoyt Sanders announced this year’s committee appointments. Councilman Robbie Roberts has been appointed to public safety, and councilwoman Shannon Galamore has been appointed to the education committee.
The council has granted permission for certain vendors at the Farmers’ Market to set up on Fridays. These vendors will be the ones whose items are not seasonal, such as jam and jelly vendors and a kettle corn vendor.
Roberts presented the council with a program he discovered at the National League of Cities meeting last week. The program is called “See, Click, Fix” and is a phone app and computer program that could potentially streamline reporting of problems within the city. The program could be used for people to report that they have not gotten trash pickup, or that a traffic light is out, or that there is a problem with a loose animal, or many other needs. The program can be customized and could allow different issues to be reported directly to the department in charge of that issue, rather than going to city hall and being dispatched accordingly. Roberts will bring further information on the program at a later date.
This year’s Veteran’s Day program had a record turnout, councilwoman Joy McCain said. Roughly 180 people were in attendance to enjoy live music and food. McCain said the only thing the council might do differently next year is add a dance floor because of the number of people tapping their feet this year.
Senior Day Out coordinator Pat Wise announced a record turnout for the seniors entertainment program as well with 30 people attending the most recent event. The next event will be Tuesday, November 29 from 10 a.m. through noon. Music will be provided by Pure Country, and a potluck dinner will be served at 11:30 a.m. Wise encourages people to call 205-680-5556 for any questions.
