BIRMINGHAM – Just after 8:30 p.m. Saturday a Jefferson County Sheriff’s Deputy was driving along Foust Court near Forestdale when they encountered a silver Pontiac Bonneville coming directly at the patrol car in the wrong lane.
The deputy moved out of the way and proceeded to attempt to make a traffic stop, but the driver refused to stop and a chase ensued.
The chase traveled onto Highway 78 to Mulberry Road and onto Roberta Road. The suspect vehicle got a flat tire and came to a stop on Roberta Road, near Collette Street.
The deputy approached the car and attempted to remove the driver but the driver put the car in reverse and knocked the deputy to the ground with his vehicle. The car continued toward a second deputy, who fired shots at the driver. The driver then put the car in drive and drove off striking four parked cars.
The chase resumed on Roberta Road to I22, when the driver wrecked near Coalburg Road, where he was taken into custody. The suspect was found to have a gunshot wound on his shoulder and was transported to an area hospital with non-life threating injuries. A female passenger was not injured and is being questioned by the deputies.
The deputy knocked to the ground by the suspect also went to the hospital, as a precaution.
This investigation is ongoing. The suspect’s name is being withheld pending formal charges.
