TRUSSVILLE – The unbeaten Hewitt-Trussville Huskies, ranked No. 3 in Class 7A, get to show off for the old grads and future grads too at Homecoming 2016 inside Hewitt-Trussville Stadium.
Their opponent is from Class 6A, Region 6, but it’s not that team. The Center Point Eagles are up next for the Huskies, and they’re more the type of homecoming foe you want.
The Eagles own a 20-16 overall mark against the Huskies, but those days are history. The Huskies won the last time these two teams played, in 2005, 41-7. CPHS was known as E.B. Erwin back then, and a man named Willie Miller was in his first season as Erwin’s head coach. Miller’s son is also named Willie, and he’s now the Clay-Chalkville quarterback. He and the Cougars handed Center Point its 11th straight loss last Friday.
Erwin won 18 of the first 20 meetings against Hewitt, back when John Lee Armstrong, Bobby Johns and Larry Farris roamed the sidelines as head Eagles, but it’s been 14 out of 16 for the Huskies since then.
Tonight shouldn’t be different for the Huskies, who are off to their best start since 2001.
The Huskies handled Buckhorn 34-23 last week, but they probably left some points on the board. Penalties played a big role in that, and in giving the Bucks a chance to tack on some points.
Connor Adair was 14-of-19 for 234 yards and three touchdowns as he continued his solid play. The traditional run game was a bit stifled by the Bucks defense, led by star linebacker Will Ignont and defensive back Nickie Rivers. But the wildcat formation, with either Noah Igbinoghene or Grayson Cash hauling the ball, was effective. Igbinoghene scored on a 10 yard run and caught a pass for a score. Cash scored from the 1 and hauled in a TD pass also, and Elliott McElwain added a TD catch.
Though Dallin Woodley managed to get to 102 yards for the Bucks, that was a victory for the Huskies defense. He’d had two games of over 200 and another over 150. It took Woodley 30 tries to get over the century mark.
Look for the Huskies to have an easier time Friday against the winless Eagles. Kickoff is 7 p.m.
