BIRMINGHAM – The Birmingham Police Department is conducting a homicide investigation after an incident Sunday.
On Sunday around 8:30 p.m., deputies were called to the corner of Georgia Road and Joppa Avenue on multiple people shot. When officers arrived, they found six people, two females and four males had been shot and were transported to area hospitals. At least two of the victims suffered life-threatening injuries, one of which, Bobby Clayton, 20 of Birmingham, who succumbed to his injuries.
Preliminary investigations indicate that one of the victims who is a teenager, had a previous altercation with a black male, who was seen driving a red Ford Mustang. Witnesses said both men started shooting at each other and it appears that the teenager started shooting first. Witnesses said the man driving the Mustang “recklessly” returned fire, striking several in the area.
“This calculated shooting was between individuals who had no regards for human life and unfortunately their actions resulted in someone losing their life,” Lt. Sean Edwards said. “So sad.”
Johnathan Chambers has been identified as a person of interest. Nothing further is available, as the investigation is ongoing.
