Trussville DAR recognizes Constitution Week at recent meeting

TRUSSVILLE – On September 3, 2016 the Josiah Brunson Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) closed their monthly meeting by reading the Preamble to the Constitution in honor of Constitution Week. Members were each given a specially designed card with a typed copy of the Preamble and encouraged to share it with their families and friends.

The celebration of the Constitution was started by the Daughters of the American Revolution. In 1955, DAR petitioned Congress to designate September 17-23 each year in observance of Constitution Week. On August 2, 1956, the resolution was adopted by the U.S. Congress and signed into law by President Dwight D. Eisenhower.

The aims of Constitution Week celebration are to emphasize citizens’ responsibilities for protection and defending the Constitution, to inform people that the Constitution is the basis for America’s great heritage and the foundation for our way of life and to encourage the study of the historical events which led to the framing of the Constitution in September 1787.

September 17th is the 229^th anniversary of the signing of the Constitution. Teachers across the state will be using educational tools designed by the DAR to encourage students to learn more about this document and what it means to us.
