From The Trussville Tribune Staff Reports
TRUSSVILLE – Trussville police captain Jeff Bridges said between 20 and 30 Hewitt-Trussville High School students were caught vandalizing school property at about 2 a.m. Wednesday before the first day of school was to begin.
A Jefferson County sheriff’s deputy spotted the activity and notified Trussville police. Officers arrived to find vulgarities written in spray paint and chalk on the roads and sidewalks, as well as trees rolled on toilet paper. The students told officers it was a “senior prank.”
Faculty members were seen picking up the remnants of toilet paper at 9 a.m. on Tuesday. Some of the chalk had been washed off of the sidewalks, but the much of the toilet paper and spray paint remained.
“We called their parents and they came to get them,” Bridges said. “We have their names and we’ll turn over the information to the school system for possible prosecution as soon as our investigation is complete. Some of this, such as the spray painting, rises to the level of criminal activity because it’s considered destruction of property.”
Superintendent Pattie Neill said each student will be treated according to the student code of conduct where we will establish a finding and a disposition.

Forgive me, but a prank is toilet paper. Spray painting the grounds AND the columns of the school is vandism. I hope these students are held responsible and punished. This is a discrace.
Chris Hallmark
Totally agree.

It took away my joy dropping off my Freshman this year…

This is not a prank to me……this is total disrespect of property. Lack of respect and a disgrace to their families as well as the school. Prank…..use toilet paper. Come on guys……let’s have a good year.

Not a good way to start the year off. Why destroy your beautiful school.

The Trussville Tribune, so was it a little spray paint on the ground or on the columns, or both?

The senior class does it every single year!! It was supposed to be toilet paper and chalk, you always have a few that take it too far (and used spray paint). It doesn’t mean we have “bad kids” in our city, just kids who made a bad decision. I’m sure they will have them clean it up and they will be held responsible for it…..just remember don’t put every kid in the same category when it comes this this. They are young and still don’t use the best judgement when making decisions.
Yes I have a senior and NO she wasn’t part of this.

The kids are NOT cleaning it up!

95% of these kids are good kids, they are not “Punks” Trussville just isn’t what it used to be…. We have all this retail and police officers who are not part of our community that hide behind church signs when kids are leaving school to write tickets to generate revenue…. I sure do miss the ole days…. when the policeman knew our kids and looked out for them and yes made them clean up TP and scared them to death if they got into trouble…. With all the crime and undesireables coming into our town, let’s make a headline about a bunch of seniors TPing the school…. Priorities???

Thank God some (hopefully most) children aren’t allowed to do everything their parents or others have done without being held responsible. Law enforcement will tell you those given breaks today are those expecting them from their parents and the legal system tomorrow. Paint was also sprayed on walkways. The teens should be forgiven but made to clean it up and warned what may come next if they participate again.

I definately think whoever is responsible for spray painting should be prosecuted. Now that IS vandalism!

Maybe it’s time to have the kids meet some of the officers, thank them for their service and forbid them to repeat your opinion about what the police do. The PD would be the first on the scene to save anyone, including our teenagers, involved in an accident and or defend our families from danger. Don’t believe a study of picking out trees to hide behind is in the PD hand book.
Mike Sherre Meadows
Sir I don’t lie and you can come down off your high horse with me! I appreciate everything the police do for our community and our families and a few ambitious folks will not take away that respect! You do not know me And I don’t appreciate your commentary!

Believe spray paint was used. That’s a whole different issue

6mo worth of Saturday’s getting things done at the school should suffice.
Deborah Reyes
It would be alright if it had been only TP but spray paint. That is carrying things a little to far.
Gena Ray Cranford
Teachers were picking it up??? Hmmmm, shouldn’t they have made all the kids involved do this?
Aaron Matthews
Just don’t get caught
Kennetha Massey
Was there paint used?

Nothing… Not one thing about this is “OK”….
Laura Hitchcock Maddox
And spray paint? It makes the school look so tacky with spray paint all over the place. You’re right a roll of paper doesn’t hurt anything.
Hope Carey Miller
TP is one thing….spray paint…that’s completely different.
Gary Cartee
That’s what I said when I saw them this morning
Mike Sherre Meadows
I think that was parents picking it up
Mike Sherre Meadows
Laura Hitchcock Maddox Agreed spray paint is a whole different story!
Matthew Harmon
God…some of y’all acting like the TP is no big deal are nuts. None of this is “OK.”
Matthew Harmon
And the TP is littering. That’s not OK either.
Mike Sherre Meadows
Well I guess we are all entitled to our own opinion now aren’t we!
