SAN DIEGO, CALIF. –Two police officers were shot overnight in San Diego, Calif. and one has died, according to the San Diego police department. The other officer is undergoing surgery at a local hospital.
According to police, the shooting took place at 3800 Boston. One suspect is in custody and police are searching the area for more suspects.
Residents have been asked to remain indoors and shelter in place as the search continues.
Police chief Shelly Zimmerman was reportedly at the hospital with the wounded officer who she says is expected to survive.
The San Diego incident follows widely publicized police killings in Dallas and Baton Rouge. Incidents of police officers killed in the line of duty continue to rise at an alarming rate in 2016 which has seen an increase of over 80 percent, so far.
